We are falling behind the rest of the nation when it comes to education, economic opportunity, and social mobility - but we are not helpless in the face of this crisis. We can fight back and make a difference. We can invest in our schools and learning institutions. We can create jobs and opportunity for our citizens. And, we can reform our criminal justice system to ensure that those convicted of crimes are being truly rehabilitated. What we need now is action. We must come together to create an environment where all of our citizens have the chance to reach their fullest potential for the benefit of Mississippi.
Mississippi has become a world leader in incarcerating individuals, surpassing dictatorships such as China and Iran. It is time for Mississippi to wake up and recognize the shocking truth our state is on a horrifying trajectory that threatens to push our prison population above 22,000 by the end of 2023.
The Mississippi Adequate Education Program Study has revealed a startling fact about the state's schools for the 2022/2023 school year - the financial shortfall of over 270 million dollars speaks volumes about our state's commitment to its children. Without adequate funding for quality early childhood education programs, our children are left at risk for the school-to-prison pipeline. Moreover, many school district offices are run by uncommitted administrators who are overpaid, while excellent teachers are underpaid and leaving the classroom in droves.
Right now Mississippi sits as one of the poorest states in the entire nation. As a Mississippian, I believe that every citizen has a right to access GOOD Health Care. We must remember that the cost of failing to invest in health care is far greater than the cost of providing it. Healthier citizens means a stronger economy and a better quality of life for everyone. It is time that we make this a priority and put the health of our citizens first and create lasting change.
